Translation programmes in the post-USSR republics are being revised with an eye on European traditions and globalization of the English language. These two major factors lie behind any attempt at modernizing the current theories and practices of translation. 
These tests are based on latest English language anthologies and well-known textbooks on translation and translatology. Of course, the students cannot be expected to know all the theories and names. But there are basics to be familiar to any student of translation. Before tackling these tests the students are meant to have gone through a year’s course of the theory and history of translation. It means that a reasonable date for it must be somewhere at the end of May.
The collection of quotations offered here reflects not only the latest developments in Western translatology, but aims at training the students to understand and recognize peculiarities of approaches to translation of different authors.
Another idea behind this test is to teach the students the gift of sifting through different authors to get at the best ones.
To familiarize the students with the latest ideas and giants of the trade one must pursue the aim relentlessly setting great store by initiative, homework and Internet-serfing.
The recommended time limits and marking:
Tests for the history of translation consist of 30 quotations from well-known authors. Each quotation is accompanied with four possible choices one of which must be recognized as correct and encircled by the student. The time limit is 4 academic hours. Less than 15 points – the student fails (a bad mark). 15 points – narrowly fails (satisfactory). 20 points – a good mark. 25 points – passes with merit (excellent).  
Tests for the theory of translation consist of 20 questions designed in such a way so as to cover the most essential points of modern translatology. Each question is accompanied with four possible choices one of which must be recognized as correct and encircled by the student. The time limit is 1 academic hour. Less than 10 points – the student fails (a bad mark). 10 points – narrowly fails (satisfactory). 14 points – a good mark. 17 points – he passes with merit (excellent).
