Style and Stylistics (the main points of the lecture)
01.12.2009, 19:35

1)Different definitions of "style”
The term applies to the following fields of investigation:
1) the aesthetic function of language;
2) expressive means in language;
3) synonymous ways of rendering one and the same idea;
4) emotional colouring in language;
5) a system of special categories called stylistic devices;
6) the splitting of the literary language into separate subsystems
  called styles;
7) the interrelation between language and thought;
8) the individual manner of an author in making use of language.

2)Fathers of modern stylistics
Charles Bally in 1905 challenged the approach to style as the art of writing well. He believed that stylistics is a study of synonymic language resources.
e.g. to pass away – to die – to kick the bucket
Leo Spitzer (10 years after Bally) tried to establish correlation between the stylistic property of an artistic text and the psyche of the author. Spitzer remained attached to the analysis of belles-lettres texts and never tried to establish the stylistic system of the language.

3)The most popular definitions of stylistics
Roman Jakobson:
"What is the empirical linguistic criterion of the poetic function? In particular, what is the indispensable feature inherent in any piece of poetry? To answer this question we must recall the two basic modes of arrangement used in verbal behavior, selection and combination. …The selection is produced on the base of equivalence, similarity and dissimilarity, synonymity and antonymity, while the combination, the build up of the sequence, is based on contiguity. The poetic function projects the principle of equivalence from the axis of selection into the axis of combination. Equivalence is promoted to the constitutive device of the sequence.”
The sentence underlined is the rallying cry for post-Bally structural stylistics.
Michael Riffatterre:
Stylistics "studies those features of linguistic utterance that are utilized to impose the encoder’s way of thinking on the decoder.”
