Peculiarities of the extract from The Young Lions
1. 5-w-and-h. What is it all about?
The key word which establishes multifarious relationships of contrast and may be indicative of the extract’s symbolism is content, suggestive of its opposite number: discontent. Michael, a man of thirty who works for the theatre and makes a little money, feels discontent with himself and people around.
The first cause of discontent is clear: Michael fails to act at the moment of danger when Arney, a silly and broken man, tries to walk through the window. Another man, Parrish, prevents Arney from killing himself. Michael is envious of Parrish’s determination and scorns his own inefficiency.
Another cause for discontent is also quite apparent: His wife Laura is apparently unfaithful to him. In short: too much liquor, too many attachments (anaphoric repetition + parallel construction), full of that talk (demonstrative pronoun).
The third cause of discontent: he frittered away the years of his youth (trite metaphor).
2. What SDs combine to back up the idea of discontent?
1) Negative evaluative epithets are put in contrast to positive concepts: disgraceful, silly, broken, indecisive, fat, sick, content
bold, rigorous, ascetic, clear, honourable
2) Positive concepts appear once in a convergence of abstract nouns which are through a syntactic proximity associated with Parrish:
decency, fidelity, courage, decision
3) A violation of a morphological pattern of enumeration generates defeated expectancy twice: ex-nothing, have another, emphasizing in both cases little importance attached by weak people to the choice of one’s sexual partner and moderation with the use of alcohol.
4) Objects of Michael’s remorse and scorn are sustained through repetition of homogeneous concepts: ex-girls, ex-beaux, ex-nothing and Martinis, beer, brandy, Scotch, have another.
5) Event irony: doing God knows what coupled with a true lack of knowledge with how many other men.
6) The use of the Imperative: take hold (repeated), divorce, live (suggestive of the hero’s awareness of what he must do to start his reformation process).
7) Gap sentence link: He was thirty years old and this was 1938 (suggestive that he was unwilling to wake up to realities).
8) The use of modals: Parrish had to be the one to jump across the room, suggestive of the feeling of regret for his own procrastination.
9) Sustained metaphor: drifting with the easy tide of the theatre.
10) Generalizing metaphor: a nest of snakes hibernating for the winter.
