A work of fiction (the main points of the lecture)

Whatever a novelist "does, qua novelist, he does in and through language” is an attractive but slightly misleading truism. A work of fiction does consist of language. But as a work of fiction, a novel has a more abstract level of existence, which in principle is partly independent of the language through which it is represented, and may be realized, for example through the visual medium of film. Two distinctive descriptive statements can be made about a verbal work of art:
1. It can be described as a linguistic text:
X contains simple words, more abstract than concrete nouns, etc.
X is written in ornate (витиеватый, цветистый - о стиле ornate / using unusual words and complicated sentences: a rather ornate prose style, lucid (literary style — ясный /лёгкий/ язык /стиль), vigorous (сильный; бодрый; энергичный), colloquial) language, etc.
2. It can be described as a work of art (including non-fictional forms):
X contains several Neanderthal characters.
X is about a woman who kills her husband.
X is about events which take place in nineteenth century Africa.
We have arrived at a multilevel view of style which can be summed up in the following way.
1. Style is a way in which language is used. It belongs to speech rather than language.
2. Style consists in choices made from the repertoir of the language.
3. A style is defined in terms of a domain of language use (eg what choices are made by a particular author, in a particular genre, or in a particular text).
4. Stylistics has typically been concerned with literary language.
5. Literary stylistics is typically concerned with explaining the relation between style and literary or aesthetic function.
6. Style is relatively transparent or opaque: transparency implies paraphrasability; opacity implies that a text cannot be adequately paraphrased, and that interpretation of the text depends greatly on the creative imagination of the reader.
7. Stylistic choice is limited to those aspect of linguistic choice which concern alternative ways of rendering the same subject matter.
8. There is no one modal of prose style which is applicable to all texts.
