Have a nice day and remember that yours is a mind-blowing profession! International Translation Day is celebrated every year on 30 September on the feast of St. Jerome, the Bible translator who is considered the patron saint of translators. The celebrations have been promoted by FIT (the International Federation of Translators) ever since it was set up in 1953. In 1991 FIT launched the idea of an officially recognised International Translation Day to show solidarity of the worldwide translation community in an effort to promote the translation profession in different countries (not necessarily only in Christian ones). This is an opportunity to display pride in a profession that is becoming increasingly essential in the era of progressing globalisation

30.05.16 No one can completely be free from the influence of discourses, primarily, one's native3 discourse. This idea is very close to what the Danish journalist writes about below (pay attention to words in red):

30.04.16 When I think about the democratic rhetoric of the Ukrainian English speaking President I cannot help thinking about a simile used in a famous story by O. Henry “The Roads We Take”. The most frequently quoted phrase from the story is: “Bolivar cannot carry double”.

The phrase has already a long story of metaphorical use in its Russian translation: «Боливар не вынесет двоих».

The implication of the expression is that sometimes circumstances are to blame for the inhumanity of one’s decisions. The best contextualization of the phrase that turned into an aphorism long ago can be found in the same story. The transition of the main personage’s face from a deeply sorrowful look to the expression of cold ferocity mingled with inexorable cupidity is shown by O. Henry through a simile:

The soul of the man showed itself for a moment like an evil face in the window of a reputable house.

Something like this happens to Poroshenko’s “European” image tarnished by false promises, nepotism, cronyism, aggressive crack-down on dissent and ruthless pursuit of profit.

29.04.16 I couldn't help laughing when on April 16th 2016 I saw such a headline in The Economist: "Clean-up crew" decoded in the sub-title as "Ukraine is broken, but its civic activists are trying to build a new country".

There is a much more accurate term for the Ukrainian brand of "civic activists": the Spanish borrowing into American English vigilantes.

vigilante - человек, берущий закон в свои руки vigilante [ˌvɪʤɪ'læntɪ] , член "комитета бдительности"

Vigilantes are much more dangerous to the future of the country than corrupt oligarchs and different brands of nationalists who preach good old Nazi beliefs because they are trying to put on a 'European' façade on the ruthless campaign against people who do not share their xenophobic policies.

Compare the units underlined in the original and the translation. Is it really the case for dropping an allusion?

21.03.16  If you compare units in bold type you will see that the nature of correspondences is different in the headline of the article:  for All Seasons - всегда  (it illustrates contextual equivalence) while in its image - по своему образу и подобию  in the body of the text illustrates vocabulary equivalence:

27.02.16 Translating a euphemistic unit may be an easy task in itself. There is no problem in establishing a correspondence between the underlined units in the following example (since word-for-word strategy may be used):

However, the definition of it as a piece of euphemism is highly important for building predictions about the frame of mind (intentions or modality) of the original. It is clear thet whithin the cognitive scenario offered by the article another correspondence is susceptible to criticism:

The short of it, readers, is that all three chickens now take up their roosts at once: The Poroshenko government is on the brink of collapse, neo-Nazi extremists have forced it to renew hostilities in the east and there is no letup in the blockade Kiev imposes on rebelling regions. The last differs from a punitive starvation strategy only in degree.

Короче говоря, дорогой читатель, теперь мы пожинаем плоды — все и сразу. Правительство Порошенко на грани краха, неонацистские экстремисты заставили его возобновить боевые действия на востоке, а в той блокаде, которую Киев ввел против восставших регионов, нет никаких послаблений.
