50 Western nations including 28 countries of NATO condemned the invasion. NATO includes 30 countries, but two of them - Turkey and Hungary - maintain a conspicuously different stance on relations with Russia and the Ukrainian conflict.

Dissatisfaction with the top brass

There are some people who do not like the course of the hostilities. They criticize the Russian top brass for poor planning and unnecessary casualties, for behind-the scenes talks with the enemy, for corruption and lack of strategic thinking.

Invasion: the definition of the term

An invasion can be the cause of a war, be a part of a larger strategy to end a war, or it can constitute an entire war in itself. Due to the large scale of the operations associated with invasions, they are usually strategic in planning and execution.”

2. The special military operation (SMO): a proxy war

The Russian “special military operation” in Ukraine is an escalation of the conflict that started in 2014 with a Kiev coup masterminded by the USA which is meddling with the territory that epitomizes a vital security concern for Moscow as a historical part of the Russian empire and the Soviet Union and a gateway into the heartland of the Russian Federation.      

The clash of civilizations

The fault lines of the Western and Russian civilizations do not coincide with political borders. Samuel Huntington's explored the fact and made use of disunited Ukraine as an example in his "Clash of Civilizations" [Huntington, 1996] thesis was indeed shrewd and illustrative for several reasons
