Frogmouths are nocturnal birds, hence the very large eyes, which may have contributed to their popularity You don't often read the word "instagrammable" in a scientific paper. But a recently published study that asked "what makes a great bird photo?" has officially deemed the frogmouth the most instagrammable of avians. The result led the researchers to use another term that I have seldom read in an academic study: "poetic justice". The frogmouth was once designated "the world's most unfortunate-looking bird". It has now been redeemed by Instagram's millions of animal photography https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-56946165

The Ukrainian journalist Olena Goncharova broke down the specifics of the etymological insult in a series in the Kyiv Post called “Honest History.” “Saying ‘the Ukraine’ is more than a grammatical mistake — it is inappropriate and disrespectful for Ukraine and Ukrainians,” she wrote. Attaching “the” in front of the name not only suggests that Ukraine is a “sub-part or region of a country,” like “the Fens in England, the Algarve in Portugal, and the Highlands in Scotland,” but it implies that Ukraine is a vassal state, a colonial territory, whereas “Ukraine is no longer a part of another country or empire,” she emphasized. “After many hard battles, it has become an independent, unitary state.” https://foreignpolicy.com/2019/10/05/ukraine-name-insult-war-russia-geography/

April 17, 2021 – Biden slammed sanctions on Russia for its bad behaviour, but…ф The US President did however call for unity, insisting that Washington is willing to work with Moscow. He said: "Now is the time to deescalate through thoughtful dialogue. "The United State is ready to move through that process. "Where there's an interest for the United States to work with Russia, we should and we will." https://www.thesun.ie/news/6855122/vladimir-putin-blocks-foreign-warships-ukraine/

In English, there is no true male equivalent of the word "spinster", an unmarried older woman. There is the word "bachelor", but it again does not carry the negative connotations that spinster traditionally has. In the 1990s, Cameron came up with a phrase for this kind of linguistic cleansing – verbal hygiene. It is "the motley collection of discourses and practices through which people attempt to 'clean up' language and make its structure or its use conform more closely to their ideals of beauty, truth, efficiency, logic, correctness and civility". In Italy, using the feminine version of "passeggiatore" flips its meaning from a lover of walking to a person who has many sexual encounters https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20210408-the-sexist-words-that-are-harmful-to-wome

This kind of ‘ableist’ language is omnipresent in conversation: making a “dumb” choice, turning a “blind eye” to a problem, acting “crazy”, calling a boss “psychopathic”, having a “bipolar” day. And, for the most part, people who utter these phrases aren’t intending to hurt anyone – more commonly, they don’t have any idea they’re engaging in anything hurtful at all. But ableism can also be indirect, even unintentional, in the form of linguistic micro-aggressions. As much as we all like to think we’re careful with the words we choose, ableist language is a pervasive part of our lexicon. Examples in pop culture are everywhere, and you’ve almost certainly used it yourself. Frequently, ableist language (known to some as ‘disableist’ language) crops up in the slang we use, like calling something “dumb” or “lame”, or making a declaration like, “I’m so OCD!”. Though these might feel like casual slights or exclamations, they still do damage. Often avoiding ableist euphemisms just means choosing more straightforward and literal language – rather than “fall on deaf ears”, one might say “ignoring” or “choosing not to engage”. https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20210330-the-harmful-ableist-language-you-unknowingly-use

The name Jarlshof meaning "Earl's Mansion" is a coinage of Walter Scott, who visited the site in 1814 and based it on the Scottish period name of "the laird's house". It was more than a century later before excavations proved that there had actually been Viking Age settlement on the site, although there is no evidence that a Norse jarl ever lived there.

Not surprisingly, the streets ring with the official language of Malay as well as Mandarin, Hokkien, Cantonese and Hainanese, and Tamil, Hindi, Gujarati and Punjabi, among other Indian languages. In fact, my Malaysian friends take great pride in a unique concept called Bahasa Rojak, meaning mixture of languages (after rojak, a local salad with often contrasting textures and flavours), often lapsing into a Malay phrase or a dismayed “Aiyyo!” in Tamil in the middle of English conversations. http://www.bbc.com/travel/story/20210308-malaysias-harmonious-approach-to-life?referer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbc.com%2F

Even in reporting the triumph of the Russian anticovid vaccine Sputnik V the author, who is the vehicle of the good news, can’t help being malicious – just contemplate the verb ‘gloat’: Russia gloated today that it expected several EU countries to approve Sputnik V this month, saying it could provide 50million shots starting from June if required. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9325197/German-state-premier-calls-use-Russias-Sputnik-V-jab.html

doomscrolling is the word of the last year – 2020. Думскроллингом (или думсёрфингом) называют бесконтрольное чтение негативных новостей, ради которого пользователи соцсетей жертвуют сном и отдыхом, ухудшая своё ментальное состояние. Такую практику считают компульсивной и мазохистской. Doomscrolling can be defined as "an excessive amount of screen time devoted to the absorption of dystopian news." According to finance reporter Karen Ho, the term is thought to have originated in October 2018 on the social media site Twitter. However, the word may have earlier origins, and the phenomenon itself predates the coining of the term. The practice of doomscrolling can be compared to an older phenomenon from the 1970s called the mean world syndrome: "the belief that the world is a more dangerous place to live in than it actually is—as a result of long-term exposure to violence-related content on television.” In common parlance, the word doom connotes darkness and evil, referring to one’s fate (cf. damnation).[10] In the early days of the internet, surfing was a common verb used in reference to browsing the internet; similarly, the word scrolling refers to sliding through text, images, etc. Both surf and scroll suggest the habit of not staying on one site or piece of content (e.g. articles or images) for long.

The Google search requests reveal that only a tiny percent of people from the Ukraine use the Ukrainian language for it, while the overwhelming majority sticks to Russian. The official promotion of the Ukrainian has reduced itself to the war of attrition against the Russian language: the 4th in its influence among the 5 major vehicular languages of the world. These are: English, French, German, Russian and Spanish, according to the statistics of the prominent American scholar Lawrence Venuti.
