1.04,17 - 27.04.17
06.07.2017, 18:15

27.04.17 “Official language planning by meddlesome experts is usually a bad idea” [Greene, 2011: 151]. Sometimes, it triggers off a language war.

25.04.17 A very useful English metaphor wild card is used in several meanings:

Syn: joker

17.04.17 Every student of translation is expected to know the 4 stages of the hermeneutic movement described by George Steiner in his seminal work “After Babel”: 1) trust, 2) aggression, 3) incorporation, 4) the piston stroke. The 4-stage scheme of the translation process went into numerous dissertations, monographs and text-books, but remains a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma (Churchill’s famous definition of Russia) for graduates of translation departments after 1991 loosening of state control after University programmes..

13.04.17  The idiom's Possessive Case looks strange in the Russian picture of the world: call smb.'s bluff (call smb.'s bluff (call the bluff of smb. раскрыть свои карты; ≈ брать на пушку; вывести на чистую воду [] And you can trap a man who boasts. You can call his bluff. (Gr. Greene, ‘The Comedians’, part 3, ch.

With one missile strike on a Syrian airfield, President Donald Trump called two bluffs at once but likely set back his proclaimed goal of defeating Islamic State.

9.04.17 "In a conflict as complicated as the Syrian one, hitting one of the parties, no matter how evil, necessarily encourages other bad actors. Trump won't beat IS by attacking Assad -- he can only embarrass his domestic opposition and, to some extent, Putin. Neither is necessarily in the U.S. interest".

It's worth paying attention to a loose translation of the article's title as

5.04.17 Shock, sorrow, anger, sympathy for innocent victims of the terrorist attack in Petersburg  and  the desire for justice and revenge - these are my feelings generated by the barbarous act. I can't help getting outraged by some cynical comments in the Western press. Jerusalem has shown London, Paris and Berlin an example of real sympathy... I spent my best years in Leningrad (Petersburg now). Many of my relatives live there. I love the city. I know its people. I am proud of their courage, modesty, calm in the face of danger and readiness for self-sacrifice. Leningrad stood up before the Nazi blockade. It shall never bow to the jihadists and other varieties of the lunatic fringe.

1.04.17 The USA is famous for its good intentions to pave the way for other nations to hell. And it is not an April Fool's Day joke...
