SWINGS AND ROUNDABOUTS брит. ; разг. победы и поражения, взлёты и падения; достоинства и недостатки, плюсы и минусы см. тж. you win some you lose some , you can't win them all What you lose on the swings you gain on the roundabouts / It's swings and roundabouts. — Потеряешь в одном, выиграешь в другом. / Никогда не знаешь, где найдешь, где потеряешь. If you earn more, you pay more tax, so it's all swings and roundabouts. — Чем больше зарабатываешь, тем больше платишь налогов. Ничего не поделаешь. Chalmers used this phrase – and the accompanying sentiment or meaning – in a poem titled ‘Roundabouts and Swings’, which was first published in Chalmers’ volume Green Days and Blue Days in 1912. The original poem is interesting not least because it cleverly employs existing expressions (round and round, up and down) to describe the pattern of financial profit and loss experienced by the travelling man. In doing so, and in using the symbols of the roundabouts and the swings to reinforce this sense of gain and loss, the poem arguably helped to bring the phrase to a wider audience. https://interestingliterature.com/2015/09/the-interesting-origins-of-the-phrase-swings-and-roundabouts/

Netflix translated the famous Russian blockbuster «Брат» into English — «бандеровец» was rendered as Ukrainian Nazi collaborator. After numerous Ukrainian complaints it was changed to an ambiguous “Banderite”. http://surl.li/vqiw

Interpreters are taken care of – a rare case! Plans to rapidly relocate hundreds more Afghans who worked for the British military and UK government, mostly as interpreters, have been announced.Including family members, more than 3,000 Afghans are expected to be allowed to settle in the UK, joining 1,300 who have already done so. The decision comes amid fears for their safety as international troops prepare to leave the country. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-57301065

The conflict between macro- and microcontext - EVENT IRONY: Just last month, President Volodymyr Zelensky donned a helmet and flak jacket to visit his soldiers in trenches at the front, showing defiance to the Russian military buildup. Praise and warm words of support flowed in from Ukraine’s Western allies. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/05/world/europe/antony-blinken-ukraine-trip.html Буквально в прошлом месяце президент Владимир Зеленский надел шлем и бронежилет и, презрев наращивание российской военной мощи, навестил своих солдат в окопах на передовой. От западных союзников Украины тут же посыпались похвалы и теплые слова поддержки. The variant correspondence “show defiance” – «презреть» is foregrounded as EVENT IRONY because the description is false: on the one hand, a helmet and flak jacket are put on when there is some danger (there is none), on the other hand, one must be courageous to “show defiance” and Zelensky does not really possess the quality.

De mortuis aut bene, aut nihil - О мёртвых либо хорошо, либо ничего. The proverb is double-edged: on the one hand it is a mere piece of politeness and the most acceptable form of hypocrisy, on the other, it is unfairly exonerating the sins of bad people through the mechanism of death. Though civilized people learn early to be respectful to death, there is no reason for whitewashing the wrong-doers. That’s why Count Odoyevsky’s variant of the proverb seems to carry more weight: "de mortuis seu veritas, seu nihil" - „О мёртвых либо правду, либо ничего“.

Gagarin’s delightfully informal quip into his earpiece: - знаменитое «поехали!» - "Let's roll!" Gagarin's historic mission in Vostok 1 on 12 April 1961 lasted one hour and 48 minutes – far less than the average multiplex movie. The 5ft 2in (155cm) fighter pilot and former foundry worker – his short stature perfect for the cramped interior of the Vostok capsule, it turned out – blasted into space from the Baikonur Cosmodrome (now in Kazakhstan) with a delightfully informal quip into his earpiece: "Let's roll!" Less than two hours later, his re-entry capsule landed on the ground near the city of Engels in Western Russia, with Gagarin himself landing by parachute minutes later. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20210409-yuri-gagarin-the-spaceman-who-came-in-from-the-cold

Translating the Russian children’s proverb «Кто как обзывается, тот так и называется»: 1) Bloomberg, Reuters, AFP, Financial Times and most others: it takes one to know one («рыбак рыбака видит издалека»). Wrong because it creates the impression of accepting the accusation: I am doing it, but you are doing it too. In other words, this proverb can hardly be recognized as adequate translation because it creates the impression of Putin’s admitting good reasons for Biden’s scandalous and stupid accusation. 2) ABC News offers another version: “The names you call is what you are yourself.” This translation involves stylistic losses of information: playful connotations of children’s communication are lost. 3) NBC has come up with “Whoever calls names is called that himself.” This translation involves stylistic losses of information: playful connotations of children’s communication are lost. 4) The right functional match: I am rubber, you are glue. Bounces off me and sticks to you («Я резина, ты клей. Отскакивает от меня и прилипает к тебе»)

Muhibbah does not mean tolerance: “To just tolerate is not really a nice feeling, it is condescending. Muhibbah is the opposite of tolerance, it means acceptance”. When Malaysia gained independence from Britain in 1957, the leaders decided to adopt muhibbah as the unifying spirit of this new country to ensure there would be no tension between the various ethnic and religious groups. For example, while the country is officially an Islamic state, everyone has the right to follow their religious beliefs as well as speak their own languages. Even now, I see local newspaper articles in which politicians call upon this word as a reminder to continue with peaceful coexistence.

We will not hesitate to raise the cost on Russia and defend our vital interests and our people. And we will be more effective in dealing with Russia when we work in coalition and coordination with other like-minded partners.

https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/speeches-remarks/2021/02/04/remarks-by-president-biden-on-americas-place-in-the-world/minded partners.

В то же время я дал понять президенту Путину, в совершенно иной манере, чем мой предшественник, что прошли те времена, когда Соединенные Штаты отступали перед агрессивными действиями России — вмешательством в наши выборы, кибератаками, отравлением своих граждан. Мы без колебаний поднимем цену, которую России придется платить, и будем защищать наши жизненно важные интересы и наш народ.

И наши отношения с Россией станут более эффективными

, когда мы будем работать в коалиции и согласованно с другими партнерами-единомышленниками.
